Neuschwanstein, Oberammergau, Dachau concentration camp
Neuschwanstein is the castle that inspired Walt Disney’s Disney castle. I had been to this castle before with my high school German class back in 1994. But Patrick hadn’t been, so we decided to do a quick trip to the Bavaria for the memorial weekend holiday. May 28th was also a German holiday (Pentacost). We were afraid the entire region was going to be mobbed with people, luckily for us, guess all the Germans decided to head to the beach or other vacation locale. We spent the night at Oberammergau, a small town known for the passion play that is performed only once every ten years. It is a beautiful town with fresco painting on many of its houses. The next day, we drove northeast of Munich to the Dachau concentration camp. Dachau was the model of all the other concentration camps. It was not technically a ‘death’ camp, but a place originally opened to house political dissidents, than gradually become a place to hold the targeted groups (Jews, homosexuals, Gpysies and others). It was somber memorial and a reminder how terrible humans can treat one another.
